Duties:
The Senior Data Scientist within Cat Digital’s Advanced IoT Analytics team will be responsible for leading important projects in product development analytics, aftermarket analytics, demand forecasting analytics, and other strategic analytics areas of focus. Our team’s mission is to understand our customers where their work gets done. Our analyses reveal machine usage insights that help our customers work safer and more productively and help our enterprise understand the market trends that shape our future business. This role will require a skillset in advanced statistical modeling and machine learning techniques for time series forecasting as well as domain knowledge of industrial equipment.
- The Senior Data Scientist bears primary responsibility for solving the business problem presented through applied analytics and acting as the technical lead for analytics teams.
- He or she will participate on cross-functional project teams, provide overall guidance to the technical direction of the project, and mentor junior Data Scientists on the technical approaches being used in order to solve a problem presented by a Caterpillar Business Unit or Service Organization, a Caterpillar Dealer, or a Caterpillar Customer.
- Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in the application of statistical methods and/or digital methods to solve business problems
- Coach and mentor other Data Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of statistical models, machine learning models, as well as in implementing digital solutions
- Demonstrate strong initiative to research and apply new methods to exceed customer expectations.
- Develop good networks within the technical community to enable them to collaborate on technical solutions, obtain resources and cooperation needed, and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team.
- Provides very good communication skills, being able to explain conclusions to customers with limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in engineering, computer science, statistics, economics, mathematics, or a similar field with quantitative coursework, and 6 years of professional experience utilizing quantitative analysis is required, or a Master’s degree and 4 years of experience, or a PhD and 1 years of experience in relevant experience.
- Must be comfortable working in industry standard statistics, analytics, and data visualization packages.
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
- Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degree in Applied Statistics, Data Science, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence & Analytics, Computer Science, Computer Science + X, Engineering (Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Industrial, Agricultural, etc.), Informatics, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, MBA with Technical Undergrad, Predictive Analytics, Statistics, or equivalent technical degree.
- Practical applications of statistical modeling (ex. Conditional probability, likelihood, independence, regression, regularization, and statistical analysis methods such as ANOVA, hypothesis testing, statistical process control, etc)
- Practical applications of machine learning techniques.
- Experience in design / development of heavy equipment (ex. automotive, aerospace, engine, transmission, construction, mining, industrial, etc)
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills and evidence of continuous learning in the analytics field
- Breadth and depth of knowledge in the application of statistical and/or digital methods to solve business problems
- Competency in coaching and mentoring Jr. Data Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of statistical models as well as in implementing digital solutions
- Experience leading analytics projects connecting data from various business domains and providing forecasts and insights to run the business profitably
- 3+ years of experience applying python (NumPy, SciPy, pandas, etc) programming to solve business challenges
- Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc)
- Strong initiative to research and apply new methods and digital technologies to exceed customer expectations.
- Good communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills
This position has the option to be based out of either our Chicago, IL; Peoria, IL or Champaign, IL offices with flexibility for partial remote work from home when we return to office.
